CV Guidance

How to optimise your CV

An integral part to your hiring process is your curriculum vitae aka. CV. It is important to make sure your CV reaches the standards expected of you for the position you are applying for and this does not change when applying for a job in China.

Here are the steps to follow to insure your CV stands out and meets the requirements often expected from job applicants in China:

1. Design matters

There are several ways to approach the design of your CV. In most cases you'll find that regardless of what your CV looks like, as long as your content is consistent and suitable, it would be of no consequence. However, it always pays to be aware of the position you are applying for and what CV design will come across as the most suitable. For example, if you were applying for a University position, it is usually advised to stick to a standard format to appear as academically professional as possible. On the other hand however, a little colour and design added to a CV meant for a Kindergarten position or Training Centre position is usually most welcome, showing your creative side and interest.

2. Content

(There are certain things that are expected to be seen on a CV regardless of the position being applied for. Surprisingly enough, many people omit certain information in a bid to attract further contact or questioning from employers. This technique however only serves to place your CV at the bottom of the pile. Employers like to find all the initial information required to proceed with the hiring process in front of them. Here is what you MUST include:
  • Full name
  • Nationality
  • Picture of yourself (expected in China)
  • Education
  • Employment (+ relevant experience)
  • Availability (when can you start working)
  • Contact information (number, email, social media, address etc)
A short bio or introduction and a list of skill sets is usually encouraged too depending on your CV design and format.

3. Layout

Your layout should be carefully thought out before creating your CV. Your layout determines what attracts your employers eyes first.
  • Picture
This should be places on top, either side of the page. This would help the employer place a face to the name within the first few moments of checking your CV.
  • Education
Your qualifications are very important and help the employer determine off the cuff whether you are suitable for the position they are offering.
  • Experience
Experience not only allows the employer to further assess your suitability, but it also allows you to flaunt the skills you have gained due to previous employment
  • Bio & Skills
These fields should be concise and to the point. Don't let them take up unnecessary space
  • Contact
Your contact information does not need to stand out but it should be easy to find. Keep in mind you won't be contacted unless the employer is interested
